Sometimes Yes And Sometimes Yes

When children are growing up, we mostly find ourselves trying to guide them and set limits. Sometimes we say yes, sometimes we say no, without always stopping to think about whether there might be room for another yes.

When we moved to India, Neem was adjusting to a new environment. One day, I got him his favourite biscuits before he even asked. Surprised, he looked at me and said, “Mama, these biscuits are for me?” I said yes. He smiled and asked, “Sometimes yes and sometimes no?” I smiled and said yes.

Then he looked at me and said, “Mama, what about sometimes yes… and sometimes yes?”

That little conversation made me think about why things always have to end with a no. Children are always seeing possibilities where we adults see limits. Of course, boundaries are important, but sometimes there is room to be more flexible. And sometimes, some days are only yes.
